In 1972, as the dust of the riots settled and Newark’s rebirth was under way, a group of concerned Newark Puerto Rican families made a decision that would have long lasting impact. They founded La Casa de Don Pedro as a means to foster self-sufficiency and empowerment for an often overlooked community.
Forty years later, the La Casa family has grown substantially, but the fundamental goal of the founders remains: identifying the community’s needs and working collectively to meet them.
Turning 40 years old is a fitting occasion to look back to our history, ahead towards the future, and celebrate the impact our founders, predecessors, colleagues, and supporters have made for the good of Greater Newark’s people and neighborhoods.
In celebration of La Casa’s 40th birthday, we are holding five anniversary events, from November 2011 through November 2012. There is something for everyone as well as a variety of ways to support La Casa. There has been no time during La Casa’s history that matches today’s threatened sustainability of La Casa’s critical programs and services due to these tough economic times. And this is happening as so many families need our help more than ever.
We invite you to join us in celebration and in support. From all of us at La Casa, thank you!
